FCM 036-2014 New Preventative Maintenance Info for DFD Vehicles

FCM 036-2014

FIRE CHIEF MEMORANDUM

DATE: May 15, 2014

TO: All Members

THROUGH: Eric Tade, Chief of Department ECT

Todd Bower, Deputy Chief of Department TAB

Steve Garrod, Division Chief, Technical Services SG

FROM: Daniel Freix, Master Mechanic, Fleet Management DJF

SUBJECT: NEW PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE VERBIAGE AND PROCESSES FOR DFD VEHICLES

FOR ALL MEMBERS:

To better keep up with current industry fleet practices, our old terminology of referring to an annual (major) preventative maintenance service as a “PMB” will no longer be used. Going forward, it will be labeled as a “PMC” service. This change has already taken effect.

(While a PMB is still an industry accepted term, it denotes a much lesser degree of service. It’s basically an oil change with a few fringe benefits like perhaps a set of brakes installed.)

FOR ALL DFD LIGHT VEHICLE OPERATORS ONLY:

(Fire apparatus operators—your procedures will remain exactly as they are now.)

As part of a new pilot program developed during ongoing citywide fleet optimization talks:

You will now start bringing your assigned light vehicle to the Denver Police Department’s Service Center (1935 35th St.) for its basic PMA service (lube, oil, filter, safety items, etc.) (Some brake jobs and tire repairs.)

• You will be notified by DFD Fleet when this PMA service is due. (You will be notified by phone. We’ll follow up with written instructions emailed to you until we get a little further into this pilot program.)

• Your notice will include instructions where to take your vehicle. (Physical address, garage door location, etc.)

• You will be responsible to have this service completed within one week of contact or your vehicle will be disabled in the City fueling system. (We’ll work around vacations as needed.)

The DPD Service Center is a high volume, quick turn-around type of facility. Vehicles will be serviced while you wait. (Anticipate 45 minutes from start to finish.) Loaner cars will not be available. They will not spend additional time addressing operator wish list items. Any items discovered requiring more in-depth repairs will continue to be addressed here at DFD Fleet either on an as-needed basis or as part of the annual PMC major service.

In addition to your scheduled PMA, you are encouraged to drop by the DPD Service Center weekly for a fluid top off, air pressure check, and a car wash.
