Athletics & Beyond and Youth on Record are planning a festival celebrating the passion of our youth. This festival will be held Saturday, May 30 at Youth on Record and LaAlma Park and on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at the Montbello Recreation Center. We are asking you to see if you have fire fighters who are interested in participating in a 3 on 3 basketball contest between your department and the police and sheriffs departments. If you have any fire fighters who are artist we encourage them to participate as well.
This community event idea emerged from our collaboration with the Office of Children’s Affairs (Joey Pace) and Youth on Record for the My Brother’s Keeper Summit that is scheduled for this weekend. What we learned from our young men during our planning meetings is that they desire the face-to-face opportunity to build better relationships between authority figures such as police officers and teachers. The Hustle and Flow celebration will help Athletics & Beyond and Youth on Record, along with community supporters, lay the foundation that will help to build these bridges. For starters, interactive activities will incorporate local authority figures.
The inaugural Hustle and Flow Festival will celebrate our youths’ interests and passion through a blend of sports and arts. The day will consist of:
- 3-on-3 basketball
- Slam dunk contest
- 3-Point shootout
- Dance performances and workshops (African & Latino, break dancing)
- Stomp/step show and workshop featuring the Kappa Youth League and the Omega Fraternity
- Music
- Visual art activities including arts and crafts
Holding this celebration at the Montbello Recreation Center is the perfect venue for this community event. Your support will help us in our mission, can we expect your participation?
