THROUGH:  Charles Drennan, Division Chief, Operations CD

FROM:          Phillip Morelli, Assistant Chief, Special Operations PM

SUBJECT:     MultiRae Meters

SAFETY ADVISORY

Honeywell RAE systems have issued a SAFETY ADVISORY, with action required, affecting the MultiRae Meters utilized by our Department.

Honeywell, the manufacturer, learned that fresh-air calibration of an oxygen (O2) sensor have failed in our monitors and could result in a false reading, caused by a firmware anomaly.  This means the monitors could fail to indicate the actual level of O2 and fail to sound the alarm if the levels are outside the acceptable range.

Interim Procedure:

  1. Power unit on.
  2. Complete fresh air calibration (DO NOT RELY SOLELY ON THIS STEP).
  3. Blow on the sensor inlet for a few seconds and confirm the O2 readings drop and generate a low alarm.
  4. If meter responds appropriately continue use.
  5. If meter DOES NOT respond to the above procedure, request HAMER 1 before entry into suspect environment.
